Look around guitar classes to see if they offer one-on-one lessons where you can bring in a song and you just learn it. I used to do that when I was in high school and they are so much better than learning boring stuff like scales. You also might want to start picking up guitar tabs. Just type that into the search engine and it'll give you a few hundred sites for it and they all teach you how to read tabs and has tons of songs in tabulature. Acoustics are easier than electrics to start on because the strings are easier to hold down without buzzing noises. You can find out anything you want online for free, but if you want a more personal approach, then yes, invest in lessons. But I would go with private, one-on-one lessons as opposed to classes. (Even better if a friend who knows how to play will teach you; it's free!). You don't really need to know anything to start; just start off learning a chord or two, then a scale, and if you know four or five chords, you could play a heck of a lot of songs!!! I taught myself how to play, and I only know four chords. But I can play notes, not chords, to about twenty or so songs, and I've only had my guitar since last July 15th.
