Django, Chet Atkins …
Django, Chet Atkins, and many jazz guitarists such as Joe Pass and Earl Klugh popularized fingerstyle music, which has it’s origins in Moorish classical guitar. Michael just innovated it and called it “Heavy Mental.”
I would classify this style as more of an avant garde / finger tapping / acoustic rock song as opposed to fingerstyle.

This guy should …
This guy should totally be composing music for an orchestra. What this guy does with the guitar is puts me in disbelief but I think whatever he’s playing is more suited to orchestral work.

2. You’re still …
2. You’re still not being clear as to what fingerstyle acutally means which is a ’style’ that’s played with your ‘fingers’. To a non musician that term is meaningless not to mention the term in itself is misleading because ‘fingerstyle’ actually refers to the technique employed not the style of the song itself.

I would agree to …
I would agree to disagree but I still think some of your comments are misleading and may be confusing to others.
1. I doubt “fingerstyle” ever emerged during an era as you say it does. Playing guitar with your fingers is as old as the guitar is itself.

You’re right about …
You’re right about Michael Hedges in some context. I’m talking about the modern style of playing for Fingerstyle. I know Fingerstyle emerged in the early 20’s. Actually Fingerstyle is a style because it has its own techniques, it is not a technique itself.
We may agree to disagree, but no matter which way we label something, this music is still amazing!

Michael Hedges did …
Michael Hedges did not create fingerstyle. Also fingerstyle is a technique it’s not actually a ’style’ of music.
